SEO Proxies Review
There are some times when you want (or need) to connect to the internet anonymously. Maybe you want to get past restrictions at work during lunch time or perhaps you're in a part of the world that monitors and restricts access to certain web sites.
On the more professional side of things, perhaps you work on web sites that you're working to rank higher in the search engines. A popular way to go about this is to create accounts on social web sites or forums, and post your links in those locations. If you do a lot of this (or use software like EVO II to do it for you) certain sites may start blocking the IP address you're using, or restrict the number of accounts you can create in a certain amount of time.
If you just need to access one or two sites through a proxy you can likely get by with some of the free services available that let you enter a URL on a web form which then "anonymizes" you and then shows you the web page.
But for more serious usage you need to set up your computer to work through a secure, anonymous proxy. This type of setup will hide any sites you access from your ISP, your boss, or the government.
The Search For A Good Proxy Service
After doing a bit of searching and shopping around I found a service called "seo proxies" that appeared to offer what I was looking for at a reasonable price. You can get packages that start as small as one IP address and when you're ready to scale up you can get packages with 5 IP addresses up to thousands, if you really need it.
The thing about this service is that the IP addresses are assigned to you and you alone. This means you are not sharing an IP address with anyone else and don't have to worry about someone else getting that particular address banned or restricted. If you do something silly to get yourself banned, it's your own fault.
My first usage of the service was just for a single IP address used in conjunction with EVO II. As I started using the EVO software more often I decided that I needed to have a few more IPs so I could let them "cool down" between uses as certain sites only allow two new accounts to be created per IP address every 24 hours. So at this point a 5 IP package works great for my needs. These five IPs also got spread across three different subnets (in my case – yours may end up differently).
Proxy Performance
The seo proxies service offers both HTTP and SOCKS connections. I started out just using the default HTTP configuration but found that certain sites wanted a SOCKS connection or they did not work properly. SOCKS allows more types of web traffic through to your computer (and back to the site) but it seems to be just slightly slower.
The connection speed is very good. My main pipe to the internet is through a multi-megabit per second cable connection and using the proxy service slows it down some, but I can still watch video through that connection while EVO is plugging away.
There really is only one down side that I have found to this service. After about 6 to 8 hours the proxy service will sometimes just stop on it's own and I need to restart it manually. This is not a huge deal if I happen to be in front of the computer watching the work progress, but it's disappointing to leave something running overnight and to find that the connection dropped sometime in the night.
Proxy Access
Connecting to the proxy is pretty straightforward. If you want to have any connection you make through Firefox to go through the proxy you can use the proxy web tool to automatically configure the connection. With a simple click of a link you can switch back and forth between connecting through the proxy or through your regular internet connection.
My preferred method is configure my computer manually through Internet Explorer (IE). By connecting this way, any software except Firefox that connects to the internet will go through the proxy when you configure manually through Internet Explorer. Firefox will still go through your main internet connection, so you can continue accessing the internet without using the bandwidth of your proxy.
How To Get SEO Proxies
I've emailed back and forth with John at seo-proxies over various questions I've had about his service. He is very responsive and professional about providing proxies.
He is also picky.
When you submit an application to get access to SEO Proxies there are a couple of unusual questions. One is regarding what you plan to use the proxies for and the other is a "how did you find us". He wants to be sure that he doesn't get clients who are just going to burn through IPs and then disappear.
But there is a way to help get you through a little more smoothly.
When you fill in the part of the form that says "how did you find us" be sure to enter my name (Roger Hutchison) and he will know you found his service through my reference. This will get you special attention and possibly get approval for using the service more quickly.
Here's the link where you can check out the service further and begin the registration process:
SEO Proxies Priority Registration
It's still a bit "underground" right now so he still has a good number of IPs available. But I'm sure as word gets around about the quality and pricing of this proxy service it's going to be harder to get in and the wait times for registration will get longer. Be sure to check it out now!
